If you use an iPhone or other smartfone for business, you're likely to be held up by a wireless bandit somewhere along the way. One of the things you need for protection is a VPN that provides some form of encryption like SSL. Sorry for all the TLAs (3 letter acronyms), but trust me, they improve comprehension in the long run. :-)
Most smartfones can't use classic VPNs, but can use the PPTP protocol for tunneling. However, most PPTP systems do not include SSL. But you're in luck. Witopia has a PPTP tunneling system which includes SSL. It's free if you use their standard VPN to protect your laptop at hotspots (less than $4 a month). No road warrior should be with them. ;-)
Of course many smartphones use WiFi when they can. Since a smartphone is just a two-way radio and a computer, you'll need to consider the same threats and defenses that you would for a laptop.
