File Management
There are a number of things you may want to do to make it easier to manage your files effectively. As a minimum you'll want a central place for most of your documents. You may want to "partition" your hard drive so that backups will be efficient. Look over "Organizing Files" and "Backup" to get an idea of what you want to do. Then come back to these sketches of how to do it.

Sections:

  • Moving the "My Documents" folder -- just below.
  • Using "My Documents" -- located here
  • The sections below are not written yet.
    • Partitioning your hard drive.
    • Moving "Temporary Internet Files"
    • Moving your Email files [OE 5.x]
    • Moving the "Swap File" -- WIN386.SWP
    • File Management Resources

Moving "My Documents"

You can easily move the location of "My Documents". Actually, My Documents is just a "virtual" folder. The real location is usually C:\My Documents\. If you "move" it to, say, E:\Documents\, Windows just puts a shortcut in C:\My Documents\ that points to E:\Documents\. When you click "My Documents", you now end up in the new location.
My Documents Dialog Box

Before you move the location of My Documents, you'll need to create the new location (folder) -- E:\Documents in this case -- using Windows Explorer.

Then, to move "My Documents": Open Windows Explorer > right-click "My Documents" > click "Properties" > click "Browse" under "Target folder location" > select the location you want > click OK > click Ok again.

Finally, use Windows Explorer to move all the files from C:\My Documents\ to E:\Documents.
