| Have you ever wondered where it got to when
you download a file, or save a document or
attachment? Either you forget to specify
exactly where you want it to go or you fail
to take note of where it's going. The first
thing to try is going through the motions
using the same program. Often it will point
right at the folder where the file is. If
that doesn.t work, you can often use Start
> Find > Files or Folders ... to locate
it. Here's an example:

In this case, I knew approximately where
it went, but I didn't know the name. I didn't
know if it was a zip file or an exe file,
but it had to be one of the two. So, using
wild cards -- asterisks are wild cards --
I asked the Find utility to look for *.zip
or *.exe files in D:\Download, including
all subfolders. I found way too many. To
narrow the search I clicked the Date tab
and modified the search to include only the
last 3 days. I used "Created" because
downloaded files are given the current date
for their created date.

This time I got only 5 files in the search
results. I then scrolled through the results
and quickly recognized the one I was looking
for (instmsi.exe). You can see that it's
in the D:\Download\Microsoft Updates folder.
By using just a few characteristics of the
file to create a search I was able to find
the file in a minute or so. [Back to Part 2]
