CLASSES

"Windows Registry", a two session class, is scheduled from 1:00 - 3:00 PM on December 5th and 7th. This is a survey class. We will get into what the registry is, how Windows uses it, how programs use and abuse the registry, how to back it up, cleaning the registry, and enough on editing the registry for you to be dangerous. The fee is $5. The sign up list is nearly full, but since it's on a first paid, first served basis, there will probably be room for a few more. It's likely that we'll repeat this class later in the season.

The status of our core "Windows XP" class is uncertain right now. Gail King is very busy building a website for the Happy Trails Community. The content will be similar to what's on Channel 2, plus what you get from bulletin boards, Town Meetings, Board Meetings, etc. We hope to prevail on Gail later in the season.

NOTES and NOTICES

Wes Pack (sp?) from Corel -- a software company -- will be at HT in NC-2 [note: not NC-1 where we met last year] at 2:00 PM next Thursday with information about of their products -- Word Perfect, Paint Shop Pro and Corel Photo Album for example. We invite everyone, not just members, to these special presentations.

Chuck Tomlinson, our program director this year, is looking for a few more "internal" presenters. If any of you have expertise in some aspect of using computers -- multi-media or spreadsheets are two examples -- talk with Chuck about how you can contribute to the program this year. A number of members have done that in the past, and they all felt what they learned in preparing more than compensated for any apprehension about making a presentation. You will find Chuck at most of our meetings.

HTCC will have a spot at the HT Homecoming Carnival on the 29, and a booth at the Club Fair on Nov 19th. Come by and see what we're up to.

TIPS and TOPICS

The topic for the meeting today was "Web 2.0: the new Internet". That's just a name for a bunch of new ways to do new things with the Internet. You'll find more information on our website.

INTERNET

Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: The name is based on the Hawaiian term "wiki wiki", meaning "quick" or "informal". Wiki also refers to the software used to create such a website. Wikipedia is a dynamic, living encyclopedia created and edited by users. There is a lot of handy information there. You can contribute too if you like.

Microsoft is making good progress on IE 7, the next version of their Internet Explorer browser. IE 7 is part Windows Vista, the new version that will replace XP, but IE 7 will also run on XP. It will have *much* better security, and will be more compliant with website standards.

If you'd like to track their progress, checking the IE blog from time to time is the best way to do that. "IEBlog" is written by some of the IE 7 developers themselves.
