Mike Diamond gave a presentation on File Management today: Why "manage" files? For one thing, it makes it easier to make sure you catch everything each time the time you make a backup.
I especially liked his Folder-full-of-Shortcuts method for capturing files that don't nicely fall into the "My Documents" folder. I'm going to use it for moving my stuff from one computer to another when I migrate.
The trick is to create a folder somewhere on your Desktop, and then use [right-click & drag] (or right-click > copy > paste) in Windows Explorer to put a shortcut from each file or folder that you want to back up into your Desktop folder.
Now you have a central location that takes you right to each folder (or file) when you need to grab it for backup. Each shortcut's "Properties" [right-click > properties] also shows you where to put files should you need to restore them.
Mike also showed us some examples from a site that has several nice tutorials. You could learn a lot about using your computer by spending some quality time at Patrick Crispen's site:

We also got a good culture lesson from the short video that Mike showed us. :-)

Curious about what's inside your monitor or laptop screen? "How CRT and LCD monitors work" at bit-tech.com is a good introduction. (Don't quit until you get to page 5, where they take a LCD monitor apart.

Think you can tell by looking if a Web site is free from spyware, spam, viruses, silent attacks, and other maladies? (Note: SiteAdvisor does not protect against Phishing, as that is a different kind of attack.) Take the SiteAdvisor quiz and see. It's easy to try out if you're interested.
