NEWS

*Start Editing Now*
Bill Davis, perhaps the most dynamic presenter we've seen, gave us a good understanding of the difference between using video editing software and real editing. The first is merely a tool, the second a skill. You can pick it up quickly with some help from this expert.

The help is in the form of a 2-DVD instruction series. It will get you ready for prime time. Well, um... at least ready to turn your videos into something more interesting than just a raw record of what you shot. The key to editing success is practice. He includes multiple tracks movie scenes that you can build a whole bunch of alternate "movies" with.

*Our meeting next week*
We're going to try... no, were going to see a live upgrade from Internet Explorer 6 to IE7. We'll talk about downloading, precautions and preparing. Then, we'll install IE7 on the club's new laptop to see how it goes. We'll finish with a tour of IE7's new features. Bring your questions too. We'll probably have time for some Q &: A on other topics as well.

NOTES and NOTICES

*Computer Club Classes*
The first classes of the season -- Computer Kindergarten and Photo Enhancement -- are now scheduled. Learn more online.

*Octoberfest Carnival*
Carol sends cudos to Amy & Terry Perkins, Steve & Lynne Gray, Jim and Ruth Wolfe, Don Worthen, and Mary Ann Kircus for so generously giving their time to work in the Computer Club's Carnival booth. Especially on such short notice. They made sure everyone got that chicken in the pot no matter what. Thanks.

*The latest "Mr.-Modem!" column is now online*

COMPUTING

*Online Office: Web Applications*
I've been having fun playing with the new wave of services on the Web. Google, and a couple of startups, now have nice "office suites" online. There's nothing to install, and you have access to your documents from any computer anywhere. For some people, the best feature is being able to work live with others on documents.

*Microsoft Office 2007*
Microsoft Office is simply overkill for most uses. However, if you see Office 2007 in your future, you'll want to note this tip.

SECURITY

*Macromedia Flash Vulnerability*
"...Security vendor Fortinet released two advisories calling attention to the vulnerabilities, one of which it said could let bad guys hijack your browser and possibly your computer if you were to merely browse a Web site that took advantage of the flaw."

*Security Watch: The Vish Are Biting | PC Magazine*
"Websense Security Labs has reported a heretofore theoretical attack called "vishing," or voice phishing. The attack involves an actual phone number and a voice-response system (or is that "phoice-response system"?) to collect personal information."

ECLECTIC

*Kegger gone bad*
Don't try this at home. ;-)

*Mind Boggling*
The range of sizes in the cosmos is almost beyond comprehension. These images can help.

*Traffic Asylum* [best with broadband]
That cable car ride down Market Street was chaotic, but this is insane.
