COMPUTING

*RedSeven*
Michael and Nick, the cofounders of RedSeven, gave our presentation today. RedSeven is what I call a local system builder, meaning they build custom computers and put computer systems (networks) together. They are making a strong push with Linux, and that's what they talked mostly about.

RedSeven sells custom built computers, and they also refurbish used computers. You can get one with the operating system of your choice, or one that dual-boots both Windows and Linux. The nice thing about a refurbished is that you can get a quality machine at an attractive price.

If you're interested in Linux, then Ubuntu is the place to start. I have an ancient computer happily running Kubuntu, which is just a little nicer, IMHO.

*The Eee PC*
This one does just about anything you'd want to do on the go. Small, but not too small, and easy to use, and running Linux. The Eee PC is light weight, boots in 10 seconds, and is quite affordable. Many people don't need anything more at home either. Pronounced "e-pc".

*How to Buy a Desktop PC*
This is a good place to start if you want to know enough, but not too much before you set out to buy that new PC.

TIPS, TOPICS and TWEAKS

*CyberCoyote and Tabbed Browsing*
It's easier for me to follow the links in CyberCoyote when I read it online with a browser (IE7 or Firefox) instead of in my email.

If you depress the "Control" key (Ctrl) on your keyboard when you click a link (in either IE7 or Firefox) they will each open in a new tab.

WINDOWS

*Service Pack 1 for Vista*
Microsoft has stopped being coy about SP1 for Vista. What will it bring? Paul Thurrott has the best rundown on SP1 and Scot Finnie has the short version. Look for SP1 sometime around March. More here later.

WEB PICKS

*Stop the Catalogs*
Unlike s.p.a.m, junk mail has been with us so long that we put up with it much like we do with death and taxes. For me, catalogs are not even the most annoying kind of junk mail, but they are certainly the most wasteful. "Catalog Choice" offers a way to do something about it. I'll let you know how it works out for me.

ODDS and ENDS

*Automobiles of 100 Years Ago*
I wonder how "green" some of these fine machines were? Too bad automobiles killed the bicycle, which was immensely popular around that time. (Click the links when you get there to see larger images.)
