WINDOWS VISTA

*Windows Vista Preview*
We explored Windows Vista today. I think you'll see something really new from Microsoft fairly soon, but Vista isn't it. Vista is better than XP in many ways, but it doesn't run on fusion or even hydrogen.

The primary improvement, from my point of view, is better inherent security. Beyond that, "fit and finish" is superb, it's quicker and easier to find your way around, and there are many nice touches here and there. If you're interested in more, this link will take you to the Vista links that I promised at the Vista preview.

*Windows Vista Secrets*
"To really appreciate what is in Vista, you almost need to read through the leading book on the product, Windows Vista Secrets, by Brian Livingston and Paul Thurrott," writes Rob Enderle, principal analyst of the Enderle Group, in TechNewsWorld. "It's 595 pages of things you can do with this product -- most of which you probably wouldn't have discovered for some time, let alone right at first."

TIPS, TOPICS and TWEAKS

*Green Computing*
Is it better to turn your computer off or leave it on? The con senses? Turn it off if you won't use it again for 8 hours or more. I do something different though. I put my (desktop) computer in "Hibernate" if I won't use it again for 2 hours or so. I also turn off everything else at the power strip.

When I'm ready to use it again, I turn the power back on, press the power button on my computer, and 20 seconds later the bear wakes up and I'm right back where I was before -- no reboot -- no starting programs -- no opening files and webpages -- it's all ready to go. :-) I use "Standby" for shorter down times.

ODDS and ENDS

*Batter Up*
Too late for the World Series, but let's see if you're a home run hitter. Read the short, easy instructions carefully. Better with sound. I was able to hit a small percentage of home runs (0.18 second or better). If you can't do that, don't try drag racing either. :-)

*Too Close for Comfort*
You wouldn't want to be this close to one of these X-class flare-ups.
