NEWS, NOTES and NOTICES

*Classes*
Two classes -- Computer Kindergarten, and Photo Image Enhancement -- are already scheduled for January, and a third -- WiFi Networking and Security -- will also begin in January.

*Recycling for Electronics*
We're moving beyond aluminum cans and newspapers here at Happy Trails. You'll be able to recycle computers and other electronic items (but not TVs). Some of it will be refurbished, and the rest will be mined for metals. Look for more news here soon.

*Kiva Broadband*
We've been looking at the wrong Kiva website to find information on DSL here at Happy Trails. Here's the site we wanted:

*Windows Desktop Search*
Next week, George will demonstrate a program from Microsoft that gives XP most of the new search capabilities that Vista has.

TIPS, TOPICS and TWEAKS

*Books on Vista*
I've learned things like TV repair, computer programming, and downhill skiing from books. Yeah, I know I'm a little different, but there are many people who find that the best tool for learning about computers is a real book.

I skimmed a few books about Vista at Barnes and Knoble the other day. "Vista: The Missing Manual written by David Pogue was the best one that I saw. He has a "For Starters" version of it too, but if you're serious, skip that one and go for the big one. Although I haven't seen it directly, I think "Windows Vista(TM) Plain & Simple" would be another good choice. If you try one of these, let me know how you like it.

*Worried about WiFi Worms*
Internet worms propagate via the -- duh -- Internet. They have infected many millions of computers. Now WiFi provides a matrix for more wormholes. Did you know that WiFi routers can link to each other? The proximity of WiFi routers in some areas has increased to the point where worms can be designed to spread between routers without using the Internet. Are you using WPA yet? :-)

COMPUTING

*Zonbu Notebook*
For you or someone you know? This inexpensive notebook, with it's "hassle-free" service plan, could end your computer frustration. Zonbu has all the programs you're likely to use, unlimited support, remote backup of everything, "unbreakable" software, and free upgrades.

*Windows Vienna, Vista SP1, and Windows XP SP3*
Those of you who like to keep up with what's coming next can get an update on these topics at Paul Thurrott's FAQ page.

*Live Help*
CrossLoop is a new service that makes it easy for a remote observer to see what's happening on your computer screen. In a way, it's better than having them there. Either of you can use your own mouse and keyboard to control the computer. You can also transfer files from one computer to the other.

I've used CrossLoop to help a few people, and I'm ready to see how it goes when I open it up to others. Give me a call if you have a computer or Internet problem to solve, and we'll set up a session. Of course, your computer has to be working well enough to get online before CrossLoop can help. :-) Broadband will be better. ;-)
