Windows Clean Startup

Useful for installing software and for troubleshooting

Click Start > Run > type msconfig > click OK to start the System Configuration Utility (SCU). If you see that you're using "Normal startup..." (the dot will be located at the left of that option -- if not -- see the process just below) click "Selective startup" and uncheck all the boxes. The result will look like Fig. 2.Complete the process outlined there.

If you see the dot at the left of Selective startup instead, follow the process outlined in Fig. 1.

Steps to temporarily change from Selective to Clean startup:

a. Start with "Create Backup"so that you can restore your settings later.

b. Select "Normal startup" to clear any (un)selections you normally have at the Startup tab.

c. Click Selective startup.

d. Uncheck all the boxes.

e. Click OK and restart your computer.

NOTE: Don't forget to undo these changes as instructed at the bottom of the page.

After you finish troubleshooting or installing your program(s) be sure to change back to the startup mode you ordinarily use.
  • To change back to Normal startup, open the System Configuration Utility > click Normal startup > click OK and restart your computer.
  • To change back to your usual Selective startup, open the System Configuration Utility > click Restore Backup > click Yes > click OK and restart your computer.
